There’s a lot of hype about detox.
Even if you are fit and healthy, for many people a regular detox will leave them feeling more energised, whilst reducing their overall toxin load.
So what is detoxification?
Detoxification is your body’s natural process of changing dietary and environmental toxins into less harmful substances before eliminating them from your body.
Detoxification can help improve digestive function, may facilitate healthy weight loss, and may also lead to the reduction in other, seemingly unrelated symptoms, such as sore joints or painful periods.
Why are we toxic?
Toxins are everywhere. Living in an industrial world there is no escaping. From our personal care items, house cleaning products, furniture, food packaging, pesticides and even the foods we eat, toxins exposure is inevitable. Even our own bodies produce toxins as a by-product of normal body metabolism every day.
One of the most common sources of toxicity for many people is an imbalance in the gut flora. When the liver, kidneys, bowels and skin (the normal channels of elimination) are overwhelmed due to high exposure of toxins they do not eliminate these toxins and therefore may reduce your overall health and wellbeing.
Through a practitioner-guided detox, many common complaints can improve, including:
- Gut symptoms
- Aching joints
- Skin conditions
- Exposure to environmental toxins and heavy metals.
The first step is always the hardest. We suggest that you clean up your diet straight away. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, processed foods and start eating whole foods, organic if possible. Exercise is also extremely important to help circulate and remove toxins. Massage and dry skin brushing is also helpful.
Which detox program is going to be right for you?
By taking a thorough history of your health issues and your lifestyle, our Naturopaths will develop an individualised detoxification support program specifically for you. This may include the use of supplements and herbs to help in the function of the bowels, skin, kidneys, liver and lymphatic system.
What we find is the people who do follow a detox program tend to adopt some, if not all, of the healthier eating habits and supplementation into their regular routine permanently.
It is often best to make the changes necessary to detox at the change of seasons.
